"GameSpot ran a story late Tuesday night confirming that publisher Atari had shut down the last remnants of the MicroProse studio at its offices in Hunt Valley, Maryland. Atari cited the completion of the recent RPG Dungeons & Dragons Heroes as the reason for the studio's closure, saying the 35 developers laid off had no other ongoing projects.

MicroProse had a legendary run in creating hundreds of games over the course of the '80s and '90s. The Maryland studio not only developed games, but also produced and published them until it was acquired by Hasbro, and in turn Infogrames nee Atari. Mobygames web site lists over one hundred distinct titles the company had helped to create, including such classics as Civilization, Colonization, 1942, Avalon Hill's Squad Leader, B-17 Flying Fortress, European Air War, Falcon 3.0/4.0, a number of MechCommander and MechWarrior games, Railroad Tycoon, and the X-COM franchise.
