Read this report filed to the Pentagon, as it stands now, the F-35 is only cleared to fly straight and narrow, on sunny warm days with no clouds.  Despite being treated like a Faberge egg, it still requires obscene amounts of maintenance time, its radar, EOTS, HMD, DAS systems are constantly on the blink, and pilots are complaining that they can't see behind them, i.e.: "Check their six".

The WWII-Era Plane Giving the F-35 a Run for Its Money

According to former Defense Department official Pierre Sprey, the US Air Force could have left those other jets out, had they sent three full squadrons of A-10s—72 planes total—to Afghanistan instead. But Sprey says the Air Force “never had more than 12 Warthogs in-country at any given time during the entire war.”

“The A-10 is the best ‘close attack’ plane ever made, period,” Sprey tells me. “But the Air Force hates that mission. They’ll do anything they can to kill that plane.” He says retiring the iconic A-10, a twin-engine attack jet with 30-mm cannons that hit with 14 times the kinetic energy of the 20-mm guns mounted on America’s current fleet of supersonic fighters, became an article of faith among high ranking Air Force officers, generations of whom had been raised to believe in the redemptive power of technological innovation.

That mentality drove production of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the world’s first $1 trillion weapons system. Development of the F-35 was going on in the background throughout the Afghan War despite mountains of evidence that the stealthy jet would never be able to attack ground targets like the A-10 could. Far away from the fighting, the generals in Washington, DC supported the F-35 because they believed “more technology is always better.”

This same thinking drove the push for armed drones over Afghanistan too. But no matter their technological wizardry, remote-piloted hunter-killer aircraft like the Predator and Reaper were arguably even worse at helping ground troops than even the highest-tech manned jets.

So if the A-10 was never going to be around in enough numbers, what could be done? Only one group had enough distance from the Air Force and enough independent money to consider a viable alternative: buying a cheap, lightweight attack plane on their own. That was the Navy SEALs. A group of them met with the Secretary of the Navy in 2006 to tell him about the problems they faced with getting good enough air support.

Like other American combat troops in Afghanistan, the SEALs sometimes found that high-tech gear couldn’t reliably get the job done, or that cheaper, lower-tech solutions worked better. This is how the US military almost adopted the A-29 Super Tucano, a $4 million turboprop airplane reminiscent of WWII-era designs that troops wanted, commanders said was “urgently needed,” but Congress refused to buy.

RISE OF THE SUPER TUCANO

The Super Tucano was a throwback to a bygone era of aerial combat—a time when pilots looked through the blur of a propeller and pointed their nose at the enemy before pulling the trigger. A time before auto-pilot, guided missiles, and infrared gun “pods.” The A-29 was fast enough to get to a fight quickly and light enough to stay there in a low, slow orbit overhead the battle.

Philosophically, the Super Tucano occupies a sort of middle ground between the United States’ two main gunships. As a plane, the A-29 could reach altitudes over the Hindu Kush higher than the AH-64 Apache helicopter, and remain overhead for hours before refueling like the legendary AC-130 Spectre gunships.

But the Spectre only flew at night. By day, Super Tucano’s tight turning radius and low stall speed meant pilots could maintain constant visual contact with ground forces and instantly shift from surveillance and reconnaissance to attack. And after dark, an A-29 could use night vision and thermal sensors as sophisticated as those on any fighter jet.

“It’s a great plane,” says recently retired Air Force Lt. Col. Shamsher Mann, an F-16 pilot who has flown A-29s. “Pilots love it. It handles beautifully, sips gas, and can go anywhere. If you want to get into the fight and mix it up with the guys on the ground, the Super T is a great platform.”

Another former fighter pilot tells me that the Super Tucano provided the “low-end” air-to-ground attack capability the United States simply never had in Afghanistan—a capability the Pentagon’s F-35 could never hope to replicate.

Soon after 9/11, the pilot said, Army Special Forces famously rode horses into the Hindu Kush, but carried laptop computers and sophisticated targeting and communications gear with them as well. “Super Tucano is almost a mirror image of that in the air,” he said. “The low-tech combined with the high-tech.”

Now, five years after Congress killed the A-29 program, with the US Air Force considering a lower-tech replacement for the Warthog, the sad story of the Super Tucano feels more relevant than ever.

The US Air Force Watered Down the F-35 Fighter Jet to Avoid Embarrassment

In 2010, the plan had been to introduce the F-35A no later than October 2016 with war-ready “Block 3” software. Under that schedule, the first operational F-35As would have been capable of performing the full range of missions against even the best-armed foe—including the deadly task of hunting and destroying the latest Russian- and Chinese-made surface-to-air missiles and shooting down fully-armed enemy jets in fast-moving aerial battles.

But a long chain of problems with the F-35’s engine, sensors, cockpit layout and other subsystems had scuttled the 2010 plan.

By mid-2015, Lockheed Martin had delivered around 150 F-35s to the Air Force, Marines, Navy and allied air forces. Just 10 of the jets were officially combat-ready—those belonging to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121 in Yuma, Arizona. The VMFA-121 planes have Block 2B software that’s compatible with just three different weapons—a 500-pound laser-guided bomb, a 2,000-pound GPS-guided bomb and the AIM-120 medium-range, radar-guided air-to-air missile. No short-range infrared dogfighting missile. No small GPS bomb. No cruise missile. No gun.

The Block 2B software also limits the F-35’s maneuverability and sensors.

“Too much of a delay could discourage partners from buying or participating at all,” the history notes. “However, the Air Staff made it clear that they wanted to avoid ‘F-22 deja vu’ by sacrificing capabilities to meet timeline pressures.” The Air Force had rushed Lockheed’s twin-engine F-22 into service in 2005 even though the plane wasn’t actually ready. The stealthy F-22 didn’t fly its first combat mission—striking Islamic State in Syria—until September 2014.

Lustigt, jag satt igår kväll och kollade på lite filmer och läste om North American Rockwell OV-10 Bronco. Den togs fram under Vietnamkriget som ett bra CAS-flygplan och de har tydligen haft 2-4 stycken av dem i Syrien nu alldeles nyligen för utvärdering. Tydligen är det US Special Forces som gillar dem extra mycket.

Jag tycker att han som pratade i den första videon var rätt störig. Orkade inte lyssna klart efter 45-50 minuter. Lite korstågsvarning och tydligt biased ("jag borde veta, för min pappa flög faktiskt F-16 i Israeliska flygvapnet!"). Hade han taggat ner lite och inte talat i en sån nedlåtande ton, hade det varit bättre.

Ryssen var intressant att lyssna till, men jag kom bara ca. 10 minuter in idag.

Edit: Kollade lite till på första videon och blev ännu mer irriterad. Många av hans argument för F-35 saknar han källor för, annat än "för att en av testpiloterna sa det", eller "en journalist som besökte Lockheed Martin sa det". En hel del av argumenten baseras på siffror, inte vad som framkommit vid flygning i det som vi kallar för verkligheten. Att han sen svär och håller på gör inte det hela bättre. Han pratar om "Flanker and Fulcrum fanboys" i början, jag undrar vem som är en fanboy egentligen.

Inte för att jag tar Pierre Sprey i försvar, han kryddar säkert sina påståenden en hel del, men ska man bemöta hans kritik av F-35, får man göra det på ett lite mer seriöst sätt.

Jag tyckte han verkade rätt övertygande, men det kan säkert behövas en lyssning till. Fanboy-grejen i början missade jag totalt då jag ignorerade inledningen. Jag tror dock fortfarande att planet är en felsatsning och att de riskerar få problem med fältmässighet och alltför känsliga och komplicerade system. Klarar dom verkligen att hålla sådana plan på linjen ifall det är de som hamnar under attack och inte får förbereda sig i lugn och ro i någon koalition på säkert avstånd? Där verkar vara någon tanke bakom projektet om att vinna krig bekvämt, och det ger inte rätt känsla. Sverige måste ha en unik position här med plan för korta vägbaser och snabba turnarounds, motorbyten osv.

Är stealth-beläggningen (coating) på F-22 och F-35 allvädersmässig, kan man fråga sig? Är det rimligt att tro att jänkarna kommit ikapp oss vad gäller jaktlänk? Propagandan beskriver det som att de är ungefär först i världen med sådana system nu, fastän vi haft det sedan 80-talet. Verkar rätt otroligt, såvida de inte också haft det lika länge men lyckats hålla tyst om saken. Norge-tråden angående F-16 som togs bort härifrån för flera år sen talar direkt emot något sådant.

Pierre Sprey´s titel som "designer av F16 och A10" ifrågasätts också starkt . Är han inte det i verkligheten så faller rätt mycket av trovärdigheten, även om han helt klart är en frisk fläkt. 
(Enligt C.A.B. Show-videon ska han vara någon slags försvarsanalytiker.)

Men det här med wingloading vi diskuterade förut får man väl revidera då, eftersom även flygkroppen ger lyftkraft. Det verkar även gälla för åtminstone F-15 och F-22. Det han nämner om en F-15 som förlorade en vinge i en kollision har jag sett på annat håll tidigare. Piloten kunde ändå landa planet, och hade han sett hur illa det var hade han skjutit ut sig, men nu blev han först varse detta på marken.

DAS som beskrevs i tidigare video uppgavs ha systemet på flera platser av flygplanskroppen, men här verkar allt finnas under nosen.

Det är för mycket propaganda i dessa ämnen. Amerikanska pro-videos för F22 och F35 som säger tusen ord om att det är världens bästa plan, men samtidigt inte säger någonting. Eller tvärtom med en kanal som "Defense Updates" som har en agenda åt andra hållet, men är lika slätstruken. Eller oändliga Gripen NG videos som alla kör samma tröttsamma "Why are we here? To make a difference."

Denna verkar dock ok, beskriver hur F-22´s tekniker har problem med att skapa reservdelar samt om föråldrade datorsystem.

Dags för en ny uppatering där bla den här Busting Myths är intressant. Jag hatar inte planet lika mycket längre, utan ser det mer som en James Bond-pryl. Dock med risk att bli en "skrivbordsprodukt", för enligt reklamen ska piloten bara kunna luta sig tillbaka och lyckas med uppdraget genom att "välja smart". Det första som typiskt händer med en sådan plan är att den inte överlever första kontakten med fienden. Hybris är inte direkt ett nytt fenomen. Att där varit mutor med vid de andra länderna upphandlingar verkar mycket troligt, och även då för F-35 som kandidat över Boeing´s alternativ, men många verkar också uppriktigt övertygade om planets förträfflighet.

Har kollat lite på YF-23 också, och det hade bättre stealth-egenskaper och högre super cruise än F22, medan sistnämnda kompromissade något med dessa saker för att även kunna vara en "F-15 dogfighter" med vektoriserade utblås. Väldigt intressant vinge på YF-23. Kanske var det rätt val att kompromissa.
